i downloaded a data recovery program and was able to recover almost all my files and photos! what a relief. so it wasn't as big of a loss as i thought. thanks for all the comments and suggestions!
What a relief! I have a love/hate relationship with computers. They don't always behave for me even when I do everything right. Anyway, glad to hear the news.
